The Reel Review
In our current, supersaturated era of action-packed but quickly-forgotten comic book movies, it is refreshing to encounter one that effectively captures both the epic scale and wide-eyed earnestness of the D.C. Comics franchise not seen since Christopher Reeve’s iconic portrait of Superman in 1978.
In what is certain to be a star-making role, Gal Gadot is near perfection, combining stunning beauty, brains and endearing humor as the superhero intent on ending WWI after rescuing a downed U.S. military pilot (Chris Pine) near her home island of Amazon women warriors.
The story, while a bit long and overloaded with the now requisite mind numbingly spectacular CGI effects, is a cleverly written, emotion-infused labor of love from director Patty Jenkins about the power of love.
