The Reel Review
A carefree night of drinking and flirting leads to sex for Connor, Olivia and Jenny, but the fantasy soon gets upended when a burgeoning romance between Connor and Olivia is derailed by some major life changing events. Zoey Deutch, Jonah Hauer-King (A House of Dynamite, The Little Mermaid) and Ruby Cruz star in this romantic dramedy.

The Threesome is a refreshingly honest, atypical story from director Chad Hartigan (Little Fish) about the complex nature of romantic relationships, featuring sharp, authentic dialogue and spot-on chemistry between Deutch (Anniversary, Zombieland: Double Tap) and Hauer-King. Cruz (Bottoms, Mare of Easttown) is also solid as Jenny, who turns out to be way more conservative than she initially seems, with a fun supporting cast that includes Saturday Night Live alum Julia Sweeney as Connor’s mom. There are some sweet, heartfelt moments.

At times the story betrays its authenticity by being both frustratingly convoluted and predictable, with highly unlikely plot twists that seem more about creating crazy slapstick moments. Even so, The Threesome does have a nice feel-good ending. Make sure to stay through all of the closing credits.
