The Reel Review
A North Georgia sheriff’s detective and an Atlanta TV journalist, an estranged husband and wife, find themselves on opposing sides of an investigation after a woman both knew well is brutally stabbed to death. Tessa Thompson and Jon Bernthal star in this whodunit crime mystery miniseries.

An almost comical, wacky tone and a seemingly unending array of questionable character choices makes His & Hers a somewhat entertaining but completely unserious potboiler with hints of the 1987 Kevin Costner thriller No Way Out. Initially we are led to believe that either of the two main characters could be the killer, as lurid details about the couple’s troubled history and the night of the brutal crime are revealed. Flashbacks yield more details as more potential suspects enter the story.

Anyone paying close attention and willing to lean into the ridiculousness of this lame-brained telenovela will likely figure out the culprit about halfway into the eight, overly twist-filled, 40-minute episodes. Thompson and Bernthal do the best they can with the lazy screenplay and bad dialogue, with assists from Sunita Mani (A Nice Indian Boy, Please Don’t Destroy: The Treasure of Foggy Mountain) and Rhoda Griffis (Ozark, The Dark Red) as a fellow detective and the wise-cracking coroner, and Chris Bauer (True Blood) as the eccentric husband of the victim. The ridiculous story culminates in an even more bonkers finale that will likely infuriate more than entertain.
