The Reel Review

B-

The discovery of what appears to be an unexploded WWII-era bomb in central London prompts a large-scale evacuation of the area. But as a bomb-disposal unit races to stop a catastrophic detonation, a group of criminals are busy carrying out an underground bank heist. Aaron Taylor Johnson, Theo James and Sam Worthington star in this action/thriller.

Director David Mackenzie (Hell or High Water) starts this very busy bank heist wrapped inside a disaster thriller with a compelling premise and plenty of action. There are lots of intricate double crosses, violence and a pulse pounding score, which together, help cover for a story from screenwriter Ben Hopkins (In Search of Monsters, The Market: A Tale of Trade) that doesn’t always make sense and gets increasingly silly in its second half.

The acting is solid despite the characters being very one note with inconsistent pacing in the twist-filled third act. While serviceable enough for those looking for a mindless action/thriller, Fuze can’t help but feel like a humorless ripoff of one of Guy Ritchie’s frenetic action movies.

REEL FACTS

• Both Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Theo James have been contenders to play the next James Bond in the 007 franchise.

• David Mackenzie previously directed Sam Worthington in 2024’s Relay.

Fuze factual error: the bank robbers were using electricity-power tools to enter the bank vault despite power being cut to the entire area.
