The Reel Review

B+

This sequel to 2015’s Marvel Studios hit Ant-Man has our unlikely size-shifting superhero reuniting with his old pals to search for Doctor Pym’s wife Janet (Michelle Pfeiffer) in the “quantum realm,” whatever implausible subatomic world that is. The sequel is brimming with all the charm of the original, plus an even more clever (and yes, even sillier) story. The miniaturization effects are both creatively cool and goofy, with the miniature version of “the lab” resembling a hokey miniaturized model of an office building with a rollerboard luggage handle attached. The one thing that makes the Ant-Man franchise so unique is its ability to make fun of itself while delivering Marvel’s trademark action and CGI-laden story. Paul Rudd and Evangeline Lilly (who dons a suit to become The Wasp) have great onscreen chemistry as the immensely likable title characters, but it is Michael Peña who steals the show as their goofy chatterbox sidekick in this gleeful crowd pleaser, which is a refreshing bit of sunshine after the good but gloomy Avengers: Infinity War earlier this year. Stay for the big Avengers: Infinity War reveal halfway through the credits.
