Henry Cavill won’t be returning as Superman after all.

Cavill and new DC Comics co-chairmen and co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran made the announcement Wednesday following a closed door meeting. The announcement reverses the October announcement that had been made just prior to the hire of Gunn and Safran.

The reversal is prompting even more backlash from fans since it comes just days after Gunn and Safran said they would not be moving forward with a third installment in the Wonder Woman franchise.

Since 2013’s Man of Steel, Cavill has only appeared in one DC Comics film, 2017’s Justice League, as well as the vastly-improved, repurposed 2021 version, Zack Snyder’s Justice League, which included original, unused footage. Cavill has since starred in Mission: Impossible: Fallout and had recently announced his departure from the television series The Witcher.

Gunn announced on Twitter Wednesday that his new Superman film will focus on the DC superhero’s younger years.
