Veteran character actor Mike Hagerty, known for his comic, everyman roles, which most recently included a role as the main character’s father, a Kansas farmer on HBO Max’s Somebody Somewhere, has died after a sudden illness at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, according to friends and family. He was 67.

Hagerty was born in Chicago, and as an alum of the Second City comedy troupe, his TV and film credits include 1987’s Overboard, where he played the best friend of Kurt Russell’s character. Over the years the character actor made dozens of appearances on shows like Friends, Seinfeld, Cheers and Married with Children.

Hagerty was scheduled to be in the Chicago area in the coming weeks to begin filming the second season of the popular comedy series. The cast is understandably devastated by the news of his passing.

Hagerty is survived by his wife Mary Kathryn, his sister Mary Ann Hagerty, her wife Kathlee O’Rourke and their daughter Meg.
