The Walt Disney Co. has announced that Pixar’s next animation film, Turning Red, will premiere straight to its Disney+ streaming platform, following the path of Pixar’s last two COVID pandemic-era releases, Soul and Luca.

“Given the delayed box office recovery, particularly for family films, flexibility remains at the core of our distribution decisions.” -Kareem Daniel, Chairman, Disney Media & Entertainment Distribution

Turning Red is the story of a confident, dorky 13-year-old Mei Lee, who discovers she has inherited her family’s mystical ability to turn into a giant red panda when she gets excited. Rosalie Chiang and Sandra Oh lead the voice cast of the film, which is directed by Domee Shi, who won a 2018 Oscar for her short animation film Bao. Shi is the first woman to solely direct a Pixar film.

Turning Red will release the super cute panda and premiere on Disney+ on March 11.
