The first trailer is out for the long-awaited feature film about the Marvel heroine Black Widow, starring Scarlett Johansson.

After Black Widow appearances in seven Marvel films, fans will finally get the backstory behind the mysterious character also known as Natasha Romanoff. Florence Pugh, star of Midsommer, stars as fellow Black Widow, Yelena Belova. Rounding out the cast are Oscar winner Rachel Weisz and David Harbour, from the popular Netflix series Stranger Things.

Black Widow takes place in the period between Captain America: Civil War, and Avengers: Infinity War.

Johansson and Weisz have said the film will explore the complex narratives of the three female characters, something Weisz has described as unusual in a superhero movie.

Johansson is one of the last original Avengers stars to receive a solo project, after Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man) Chris Evans (Captain America) and Chris Hemsworth (Thor).  Jeremy Renner will be having his own Hawkeye series on Disney+.

Black Widow is scheduled for release in May 1, 2020.
