Oscar Shortlists! From Foreign Language Film and Documentary to Best Original Song
In a break from past tradition, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) has revealed all of its shortlists for nine of the 24 categories that will be celebrated on Oscar night. Last year, each of the winnowed down shortlists was announced on different dates throughout December. This also marks the first year that ALL Oscar voting – from shortlists through nominations through final voting – is being done exclusively online.
Biggest snubs from the shortlists – the uniquely fascinating Swedish film Border (Gräns) in the Best Foreign Language Film category (although it did make the shortlist for Best Makeup and Hairstyling), and that only one song from A Star Is Born, Lady Gaga’s “Shallow” made it through, leaving no love for her other two songs “I’ll Never Love Again” and “Always Remember Us This Way.”
Best Original Score and Best Original Song were added to the shortlist procedure this year, reportedly to increase the likelihood of some fresh faces among the nominees. Last year 70 songs were shortlisted, muddying the waters for all but the most widely recognized songs.
