The Reel Review
This late 1800s period piece starring Judi Dench is loosely based on documents discovered in 2010 describing Queen Victoria’s previously undisclosed friendship with a young Indian man during the last years of her life – a friendship that apparently raised eyebrows among her family and close associates. The period costumes and set design offer an interesting glimpse into the era, and Dench is predictably sublime in yet another portrait of a queen, but sadly there just isn’t much of a story to tell, which makes this film a pretty pointless snoozefest for all but the most diehard Dench fans.
