This visually striking 2015 Academy Award nominee for Best Foreign Language Film is based on the brief 2012 occupation of the ancient Sahara desert city by gun-toting Islamic extremists. Despite its simplicity, lack of character development and an agonizingly slow pace (seriously, I’ve seen paint dry faster), the film’s tragic vignettes portraying the stiff penalties villagers must pay for committing absurd “crimes” still pack quite an emotional wallop, especially amidst the current wave of extremism sweeping parts of the Muslim world.
