This HBO biopic delves into the 2008 arrest of Wall Street con man Bernie Madoff, perpetrator of the largest Ponzi scheme in U.S. history, and its fallout on family members and business associates. Robert DeNiro and Michelle Pfeiffer are both excellent as the calculating scam artist who charmed more than 64 billion dollars out of investors and his wife who says she was unaware of the scheme, but given its epic scale and the thousands of investors ruined as a result, the treatment by director Barry Levinson (Rain Man, Good Morning Vietnam) is tepid at best and oddly sympathetic towards Madoff’s wife and sons.
