Tom Cruise stars in this first release from the new Dark Universe series reboot (Frankenstein, Dracula, The Invisible Man, et al.) as a modern day mercenary who, along with a pretty blonde Egyptologist, unearths a long buried, evil mummy set on ruling the world. The film is loaded with all the requisite eye-popping visual effects, but sadly it is saddled with a ridiculously insipid story and corny jokes that has us longing for Brendan Fraser’s much more fun and entertaining 1999 mummy film. Let’s hope the Dark Universe’s Bride of Frankenstein fares a better fate when she is released on moviegoers next year.
