An uncharacteristically unsexy Colin Farrell stars in this socially subversive satire about a world where people are forced to find soulmates based on superficial characteristics – or be turned into an animal of their own choice (hence the title). The strange, symbolic-laden premise pokes fun at human nature – more specifically, the reckless choices made by people desperate to meet societal pressures to be in a relationship as well as those just as desperate to remain single. Director Yorgos Lanthimos crafts a thought-provoking film that, despite being an acquired taste that sometimes drifts off course, will delight those who can embrace its quirky, absurdist, art house vibe.
