The Reel Review
Sam Elliott stars in this sweet film as an aging, iconic Western film star facing his own mortality after being diagnosed with cancer. Director and co-writer Brett Haley crafts a relatable, realistic portrait of a man motivated by the prospect of death to start living – to repair strained relationships with his ex-wife (Katherine Ross) and daughter (Krysten Ritter), start a new romance with a stand-up comic (Laura Prepon) and pursue new career opportunities. Elliott’s subtle, understated performance is masterful and the inclusion of Ross (they’ve been married since 1984) is a nice touch for longtime fans of the twosome. Ritter and Prepon are both excellent too.
