New York teenager Miles Morales is bitten by a radioactive spider, developing mysterious superpowers that transform him into Spider-Man. Soon after, he realizes that the evil villain Kingpin has opened portals into other universes and pulled other versions of Spider-Man into his world.
Sony Pictures Animations leaves nothing on the table in this heavily-produced animated film. It has creative and innovative animation, clever dialogue and a cavalcade of celebrity voiceovers – among them, Hailee Steinfeld, Kathryn Hahn, Nicholas Cage, Lily Tomlin, Chris Pine and Mahershala Ali. And while the film does have some cute moments as well as a portrait of the Spider-Verse that will delight hardcore comic book nerds, for everyone else, the frenetic blur of action feels like an attempt to distract moviegoers from an exceptionally average, unremarkable and overrated film.
