The Reel Review

B

Vastly better storytelling and a surprisingly good cast of young actresses raises the bar, and the scares, in this prequel to the very average 2014 film, which, in this go ’round, has a fake fortune teller widow and her two daughters inadvertently opening a window into the spirit world when they introduce a Ouija board into their act. Oopsies! Hasbro product placement aside, this 1960s period piece, presumably at a time when flashlights didn’t exist, shows our gals breaking the three cardinal rules of the game – don’t play alone, don’t play in a graveyard (spoiler alert!) and always say goodbye. And yup, based on that last game rule violation (and a disappointingly lame ending), expect another sequel in a couple of years. Hopefully it will be as entertaining as this one.
