The Reel Review

A+

This terrific, character-driven drama is the story of 15-year-old Charley, who, at the end of his rope, and apparently having no one to care for him, attaches himself to an aging racehorse in the twilight of its career, in an Iliad-type journey in search of a better life.

Charlie Plummer (All The Money In the World and no relation to its star, Christopher Plummer) is mesmerizing in this utterly heartwrenching, lump-in-your-throat performance, supported by equally compelling performances from Steve Buscemi and Chloë Savigny.

Writer/director Andrew Haigh’s script, based on the Willy Vlautin novel, paints an unflinching, razor sharp portrait of life for the impoverished fringes of American society that is both powerful and shocking.
