The Reel Review
There isn’t a soul who was alive in 1994 who isn’t familiar with the Tonya Harding/Nancy Kerrigan figure skating scandal. This dark comedy/biopic stars Margot Robbie in the title role.
Robbie hilariously uses dark humor to paint our abrasive antiheroine in a much more sympathetic light, detailing the snobby skating establishment’s mistreatment due to Harding’s low class upbringing, the history of shocking physical abuse from nearly everyone in Harding’s life, and Harding foolishly surrounding herself with mind numbing buffoons who cost her her career.
Robbie, along with scene-stealing Allison Janney, as Harding’s hysterically hateful mother, together make what could have been just a mildly interesting story into a wildly entertaining indictment of the court of public opinion… yes, us.
