The Reel Review

C+

This 1940s period piece is based on the strange true story of the New York socialite and wannabe diva that historians have dubbed the world’s worst opera singer – a wealthy art patron who, despite a lack of talent, won (or bought) a considerable celebrity following. Were it not for yet another stellar performance by Meryl Streep, who is in her element, bedazzled in wonderfully ridiculous costumes, this only mildly entertaining history lesson would have been a tedious failure, but Streep makes her a likable, war era optimist who just maybe was in on the joke, happily singing horribly off-key. That said, this is a film only for hardcore Streep fans.
