The Reel Review
If you are longing for a good 1800s English romantic drama (and let’s face it, who isn’t?) then this remake of the classic Thomas Hardy novel is pretty damn close to perfect. There are two standouts in this well done period piece – the sumptuous, Oscar-worthy cinematography, complete with rolling hills and gorgeous sunsets, and Carey Mulligan, as the independent-minded bachelorette caught in the sights of three suitors – a farmer, a soldier and a wealthy land baron. The film’s message, about the resiliency of true love in a world with few happy endings, is timeless.
