The Reel Review
This Netflix young adult dramedy is about four female besties spending their final weeks of high school smoking weed, hooking up, partying and hanging out, but with a catch. They are all deeply saddened by the tragic death the year before of a boy who was the big brother of one of the foursome and the boyfriend of another. While the film has a solid cast of up and coming stars – Lucy Hale (Pretty Little Liars), Kathryn Prescott, Alexandra Shipp (Love, Simon), and rapper Awkwafina (in the soon to be released Ocean’s 8) – and has some sweet, heartfelt moments, first time filmmaker Olivia Milch tries a bit too hard to make her female empowerment story edgy (i.e. raunchy), which gives the film a hollow, inauthentic vibe, making Dude a bit of a dud.
