The Reel Review
This historical drama is set in 1940, during the early days of World War II, when Winston Churchill became British Prime Minister just as Nazi Germany already had captured several European countries.
Gary Oldman, in a career-defining role, is astounding as Churchill, who, besides the approaching Germans, must battle his own war cabinet, which favors negotiating a peace treaty, rather than fighting Hitler.
While the film is a bit dry at times, the acting is top notch, and it is an important and inspirational story about how one individual’s courage and perseverance altered the course of history.
