The Reel Review
At first glance, this broody, moody German-language Netflix original series looks like a typical supernatural sci-fi drama about kids disappearing in the Black Forest. But a few episodes in, the plot elements suddenly look more like SNL nightclub promoter Stefan’s “it has everything!” list: a spooky cave, a nuclear power plant, time travel, marital infidelity, and 80s music. While this way more adult hybrid of Stranger Things and Looper is conceptually very cool with its creepy score and decay-ridden set design, unfortunately it plays out like a really slow, tedious jigsaw puzzle until the last few episodes. If you are willing to ride out the binge watch, opt for the original German language version with subtitles, as the version dubbed in English is distractingly awful.
