The Reel Review

A-

Iris’ plans for a romantic weekend getaway at a fancy lake house with her dreamy new boyfriend and his friends takes a sinister turn when one of the people at the house ends up dead. Sophie Thatcher, Jack Quaid and Lukas Gage star in this sci-fi/thriller/horror.

Sophie Thatcher in Companion

This is a movie best seen without knowing anything about it beforehand. But for those who’ve already seen the trailer, once the big twist is revealed in Companion about 25 minutes in, what looks to be a more adult knockoff of the popular 2023 sci-fi thriller M3GAN turns the tables with yet another twisty jolt a few minutes later. The other big difference is that this time we are rooting FOR the AI android. (Well, maybe we rooted a little for M3GAN too, at least at first.)

Jack Quaid and Sophie Thatcher in Companion

Writer/director Drew Hancock (My Dead Ex, Suburgatory) has assembled a humorous, refreshingly unique and clever story that pokes fun at co-dependent, one-sided relationships and shines a needed spotlight on the relatively ignored, simmering hatred of women by incels (involuntarily celibate men, typically white), while also not taking itself too seriously. Solid performances from Thatcher and Quaid make Companion a really fun, bloody good time.
