The Reel Review

A+

A couple of cowboys strike up a romance one drunken night in 1963, while watching over sheep on a remote mountain in Wyoming, sparking a 20 year love affair as each juggles marriages, children and jobs with their periodic liaisons on remote camping trips. Director Ang Lee’s adaptation of the short story by Annie Proulx captures the frustration and longing of two gay men in an era when homosexuality was socially taboo. A haunting musical score and scenic vistas underscore the lonely lives each must live, unable to be together.  Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal are both exceptional, as is Michelle Williams as the wife living with the secret that her husband is gay. Then there is that gut punch of an ending.
