The Reel Review

B+

Ben Stiller is Brad, a frustrated, unsatisfied 47-year-old, obsessively comparing himself to his wealthier and more glamorous appearing college friends who, in his eyes, are vastly (and unfairly) more successful than him. Incapable of appreciating all that he has achieved, Brad instead jealously dwells on what he hasn’t, his insecurities bubbling to the surface during a tour of colleges in Boston with his teenage son. Stiller, in a rare, non-comedic turn, delivers an unflinching, powerful performance as an unloveable and unloving individual consumed by competitiveness and selfishness – the sad byproduct of our society’s current obsession with and corruption by social media. It’s a well done, thought-provoking film, although you will be longing for an emotional Silkwood shower afterwards to wash away all the yuckyness.
