Lifelong friends Daveed Diggs and Rafael Casal co-wrote and star in this drama/comedy about Collin (Diggs), a convicted felon in Oakland, California, who’s sweating his final days of probation, and his chance at a new life, when he sees a white cop kill an unarmed black man. At the same time, Collin finds himself torn between his loyalty towards his best friend Miles (Casal) and his fear that Miles’ volatile temper and recklessness could ruin his own chance at a better life. Diggs and Casal have crafted a clever and provocative, rap-infused story, that, despite some predictable moments, and under the impressive directorial debut of Carlos López Estrada, strikes the perfect balance between seriousness and humor, and is thought-provoking without coming off as preachy. Its setting, with the twosome working for a moving company in the socially gentrifying neighborhoods in Oakland, not only is heavily symbolic but is also good for some genuinely funny moments.
