The Reel Review

A-

HBO’s seven episode murder whodunit and whositdunto, adapted by Michelle Pfeiffer’s hubby David E. Kelley (LA Law, Abby McBeal, Chicago Hope) from the popular novel, stars Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, Laura Dern, Shailene Woodley and Zoe Kravitz as a group of housewives dealing with rape, domestic violence, infidelity, overprotective parenting and bullying amidst the fabulous coastal backdrop of affluent Monterey, California. Think a much more realistic but equally self-indulgent Real Housewives (of wherever) meets a more grown-up version of MTV’s Laguna Beach with a dash of Desperate Housewives crazy. The story is addictive and the acting is outstanding, complimented by a great score, gorgeous visuals and funny flash forwards to keep the story moving. The big finale, while a crowd pleaser, is not all that surprising and ties up the loose ends a bit too predictably to be convincing, but it’s still a very fun mini series.
