While director David O. Russell’s latest venture lacks the charm of last year’s Silver Linings Playbook, this heavily-fictionalized version of the Abscam sting operation of the late 1970s is a wild ride, focusing on a couple of grifters (Christian Bale and Amy Adams) who, to avoid jail time, team up with an ambitious FBI agent (Bradley Cooper) trying to make a big name for himself. The combo of quirky characters, kickass costumes and a driving disco beat helps divert attention from a convoluted, and at times, ridiculous plot.
