The Reel Review

B-

A hard-drinking elderly woman seeks revenge after a corrupt legal guardian unaware of her mysterious past sells her home without her knowledge, locks her and her ailing husband away in a prison-like retirement home, and threatens her adoring granddaughter, all while attempting to steal the rest of her savings. Dale Dickey and Romane Denis star in this crime thriller.

Romane Denis in The G

The best thing that The G has going for it is character actress Dickey as the titular G (granny), who kicks ass as she takes out the bad guys. The story suffers from sluggish pacing and not all that much action, although it does have a fair number of unpredictable plot twists and a healthy amount of realism. How the criminal legally was able to become her legal guardian is a bit far-fetched, however.

While the film is a fairly run-of-the-mill crime drama, there is a certain level of satisfaction in seeing Dickey’s take-no-prisoners character get her revenge against criminals who exploit the elderly.

REEL FACTS

• Unfortunately, conservatorship, which requires medical professional input and court approval, is often used by unscrupulous people, typically relatives, to bully the elderly.

• Dale Dickey (Hell or High Water, A Love Song) won the Independent Spirit Award for Best Supporting Female for her performance in the 2010 crime thriller Winter’s Bone that starred Jennifer Lawrence.

The G was filmed in Montreal, Canada.
