CODA was the big winner at the 2022 Oscars Sunday night, in a ceremony marred by Will Smith’s shocking outburst earlier in the evening, when he rushed the stage and slapped comedian Chris Rock and repeatedly cursed at him after Rock cracked a joke about Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, referring to her shaved head as a look for GI Jane 2. (Smith reportedly suffers from hair loss.)

Later in the ceremony, Will Smith won the Best Actor Oscar for his performance in King Richard. During his speech he tearfully apologized to the Academy and his fellow nominees – but not to Chris Rock – in a rambling speech in which he talked about protecting family.

In addition to winning Best Picture, CODA also picked up Oscars in the Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Supporting Actor categories. Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi blockbuster Dune picked up the most Oscars of the night, winning awards in six of the ten categories where it was nominated.

Oscar hosts Amy Schumer, Wanda Sykes and Regina Hall.

Amy Schumer, Wanda Sykes and Regina Hall were hosts for the evening’s festivities, keeping the show lighthearted and fun – at least until the Smith outburst.
