Aquaman Makes DC Comics History – Thanks China!
The DC Comics superhero blockbuster Aquaman has now earned more than $1 billion (yes, billion with a B) worldwide, making it the second-largest DC superhero film of all time, behind 2012’s The Dark Knight Rises, at $1.08 billion. Aquaman will likely surpass that mark and become DC Comics’ #1 moneymaker of all time by the end of January. Aquaman‘s success has been a big boost for DC Comics, which until 2017’s Wonder Woman, had consistently underperformed at the box office compared to the wildly popular Marvel Universe films.
Only $287 million of Aquaman‘s box office profits has come from ticket sales in the United States and Canada, where the film still trails other DC Comics superhero films Wonder Woman ($412.5 million), Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice ($330.3 million) and Suicide Squad ($325.1 million). Aquaman‘s biggest box office haul to date has been China, which accounts for more than 40% of the superhero movie’s ticket sales outside of North America.
There were five movies released in 2018 that have surpassed $1 billion (click on the movie titles below for our reviews of each – one actually made our 10 Worst List for 2018):
- Avengers: Infinity War ($2.048 billion)
- Black Panther ($1.346 billion)
- Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom ($1.309 billion)
- Incredibles 2 ($1.242 billion)
- Aquaman ($1.02 billion)
While the sequel to Aquaman is still being developed, rest assured that it pretty much a certainty now.
