The Reel Review
In this reboot of the character made famous in the Tom Clancy’s spy novels, Chris Pine is the CIA analyst trying to save the world from a global economic depression at the hands of an evil (yawn) Russian billionaire.
This movie is reminiscent of that feeling you get when you buy a can of whole cranberries, only to discover that what you have instead is a can of jellied cranberry sauce that retains the shape of the can when it plops out.
While Pine and Keira Knightley, as his eager to assist girlfriend, are engaging and certainly fun to gawk at, the derivative story, increasingly ridiculous plot twists and an over-the-top performance by Kenneth Branagh (who also directs), keeps this action film firmly stuck in the realm of sleek looking but absolutely mind numbing entertainment barely worth your time.
