The Reel Review

A-

Chris Hemsworth stars in this true story about the dozen U.S. Army Special Forces Green Berets, who, following the attacks of 9/11, were the first to enter Afghanistan, where they fought alongside the country’s Northern Alliance to defeat the Taliban. It was amazing that they even survived, much less won, given that they were vastly outnumbered and achieved their victory over the Taliban’s tanks and missiles… while on horseback. (In all honesty, the U.S. military airstrikes helped significantly too.) The action is taut, fast-paced and intense, with excellent performances by Hemsworth and Michael Shannon as his second in command, making the most out of these incredibly brave (albeit thinly developed) characters. The star of this film is photojournalist-turned-director Nicolai Fuglsig’s pulse-pounding, realistic battle scenes, that will make you feel like you have been through combat by the time the credits roll. Fun trivia – Hemsworth’s real life wife, Elsa Pataky (Fast & Furious 6, Furious 7), plays his wife in the film.
