The Reel Review
Dwayne Johnson reunites a third time with director Brad Peyton (San Andreas and Journey 2: The Mysterious Island) in this film adaptation of the popular 80s video game. The premise – Johnson and a geneticist (Naomie Harris) must stop a trio of genetically-mutated animals that have evolved into giant, angry, skyscraper-bashing monsters set on destroying downtown Chicago. The target audience of this clumsy, mindless film, with its ridiculous story, destruction-obsessed CGI, and adolescent humor, is pre-pubescent boys… and grown men who want to pretend they are too, for a couple of hours. You’d be better off watching San Andreas, which while eerily similar (just minus the monsters), was at least slightly better.
