Eva Marie Saint, one of the last stars from the Golden Age of Hollywood who until today had been the oldest living Oscar winner, has died of natural causes at the age of 102, surrounded by her loved ones at her Los Angeles home.

Born on the 4th of July in 1924 in Newark, New Jersey, Saint attended Bowling Green State University and began her career as a TV and radio actress in the late 1940s, later making her film debut opposite Marlon Brando in 1954’s On the Waterfront. Among the film’s eight Academy Awards, which included one for Best Picture, was Saint’s win for Best Supporting Actress.

One of Saint’s most iconic roles throughout her 80-year career was in Alfred Hitchcock’s 1959 thriller North by Northwest, opposite Cary Grant. Other notable screen credits include 1957’s A Hatful of Rain, 1960’s Exodus with Paul Newman, and 1965’s The Sandpiper, co-starring Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. Saint’s last film was 2014’s Winter Tale, co-starring Colin Farrell and Downton Abbey‘s Jessica Brown Findlay.

Saint and her husband, film producer Jeffrey Hayden, were married for 65 years until his death at the age of 90 in 2016. She is survived by two children, four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, having celebrated four generations of family at her 100th birthday.
